Middelfart beats Marienlyst for the second time,

from volleyball.dk

translated by gramtrans

For only the second time in this season Marienlyst's gentlemen lost in the league for picked teams to another Danish team. And for the second time, it was the Funen rivals from Middelfart, who got acrid on the masters.
At own track Marienlyst even lost as clearly as 3-0, and only just finally the Odense-toses was coming along in the fight, but Middelfart managed to lock up with the figures 30-28. Because Middelfart was the victory hugely important, because the team consolidated the fourth place and now looks like to have put course against the semifinals. And unless the west Funen-inhabitants succeed in moving further forward in the position, the semifinal will probably just will stand against Marienlyst. Therefore it also morally was important to defeat the local rivals. The row's number 2 and 3, Gentofte and Aalborg HIK, also won on the weekend, so that the distance between Marienlyst and the rest ones on the top 4 were reduced. Gentofte won on away ground probably over Skovbakken, but with a single set loss. Aalborg HIK’'s victory in Holte was scarce so convincing, even though the figures were at 3-1 were the same.

The week's fights
Skovbækken Volley - Gentofte Volley 1-3 (19-25, 25-23, 11-25, 14-25)
Holte IF - Aalborg HIK 1-3 (22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 21-25)
Marienlyst - Middelfart VK 0-3 (18-25, 22-25, 28-30)

Upset!!!

On Sunday, February 8th, we played Marienlyst for our final regular season match against them. Before the match, Marienlys list was 11-1, their only regular season loss was to us back in November when we beat them 3-1 at our gym. This time we headed to Odense to play them at their barn. With 2 weekends off from regular season play, Marienlyst managed to win the Pokal Cup Championship and the Nordic Championship. Needless to say there seemed to be some extra fans in the gym to see this allstar team. Including exhibition, tourniment play and regular season matches, I think we've played them close to 10 times already. As you can guess, a rivalry has started and even into warmup there was some 'discussion' beginning to boil!

They switched up their lineup a little bit, using a different libero and left side then we usually see. We jumped on these players serving consistently but tough. We didn't go on too many lng serving runs but our sideout game was very effective. We won the first set 25-18. After this they subbed back in the their starting leftside. Again, solid sideout and containment of their hitters allowed us to take a lead. They made a libero substition (which is now legal with the new 2009 rules) and had their starting lineup on the floor. We pushed through and won the second set 25-22. Tasting victory, we pushed even harder, however it led us to tighten up. Early in the set, we started to focus on winning instead of the individual tasks at hand. We got down 2 or 3 points however after clearing our heads we were able to battle back to even. Both teams sided out pretty evenly until we were finally victorious 30-28 to complete the sweep!

Victory is always nice, however, the match was a definite team effort. We started using different weapons that they had not previously seen (more pipe, more from one of our middles). Personally, I didn't attack on too many balls, as they switched their matchups after last weeks match in Sweden and I was matched up against their best blocker. I was able to still pass effectivly and play really solid defence.

All in all, another big step in the right direction!

Game 1 of Nordic Championship in Sweden vs Falkenberg

We are currently in Sweden playing in the Nordic Championship. This is the final tournament for the tourni we started playing in Norway. There are 4 teams (Marienlyst [Top team in Denmark], Falkenberg [Top team in Sweden], Nyborg [Top team in Norway], and us). After all the injuries, it was a good chance for us to get tested with 3 good matches. The way this tourni works is everyone plays everyone and the team with the best record wins the tournament.

Our first match was against the home team Falkenberg. This is the team that knocked out Middelfart last year from the Nordic Championships and in the first round beat Gentofte 3-0. They are a very big and physical team that serves very aggressive. Their six starters all had spin serves.

The first set was very close where both teams traded points til about 20-20 until they served a pair of aces and we couldn't side out and lost the set 25-22. The next 2 sets were very much the same close kinds of sets however we improved out passing and won 27-25 and 25-21.

The fourth set we started serving tougher and putting their outside hitters into trouble. We also stepped up our defence making it difficult forthem to score. We got out to a 20-14 lead and could taste the victory. However Falkenberg is the top Swedish team for a reason, A couple aces and blocks and they had cut the lead to 21-17. We continued pushing through and won the set 25-21.

George played fantastic. I think he had about 16 points. Alot of them at key times against 3 man blocks Matt was also a really strong leader and touched a lot of blocks. We didn't have too many blocks to the floor as they covered their hitters very well, but we recycled alot of balls with our defence.
This is me, after the game. I was awarded Player of the Match

Close up of the trophy!

A little celebration after the match

My dinner!

That's all for now, We played Marienlyst tomorrow at 1430. Should be a fun match!

The Injury Bug makes its way to Middelfart

On every team, a coach always fears that injuries can sneak up at any time. Even with the most elite training fluke injuries do happen that can leave players injured for some time. I felt that frustration as a coach this weekend when my star setter rolled her ankle during our second match of 7. The bug has been especially evident on our team as well. Scott pulled a muscle and hasn't been training 100% for weeks now; Bo and Soren both injured their arm; Matt rolled his ankle and hasn't been practicing for a few days; and i've had jumpers knee which hasn't kept me out of practice, but has been pretty painful.
With these injuries, there is much more pressure on the remaining players to perform in a situation where they feel less comfortable. With my girls team this weekend, after losing our setter, they were able to pull of 4 wins and 1 loss with only 5 players and adapting to an old style of volleyball with every setting and hitting. For our professional team, I don't think we will have to resort to going back to everyone setting, but dynamics do change. Even once injured players return it often takes them time to re-establish themselves since they have lost some training. However, If we can persevere and get through these injuries with all the players returning, it will make us a stronger and better team- not just for overcoming the injury but also to challenge our depth and to place guys in different roles. We have 3 matches this weekend in Sweden for the Nordic Championship. With a completely healthy team it would be a difficult weekend. With a team that is a little banged up, it just seems like the perfect opportunity to shine!
